The Roman gladiator games were contests between a man and an animals before spectators and it was literally a fight for one's life, but not always. The Gladiator games are one of the most common and most popular information most people know about Ancient Rome. Romans let the animals starve to make them angry so they would fight better against the humans. The Roman Gladiators were usually men, although women fought too, it wasn't as common. They were often slaves, criminals, or prisoners of war. There were 100 days of games devoted to Titus. Contests between people were a continuous thing all day. The games would have continued on if Christians wouldn't have later stopped them, which were only the parts that required humans to be killed. In 80 AD, there were approximately 9,000 animals killed because of the contests. If there was too much blood on the ground, it was covered with a thick layer of sand. After that, they continue on with the remainder of the games.
Before they became really popular among everyone, the games used to be apart of funeral services. When a member of a wealthy family passes away, the family arranged contests between slaves or criminals. Romans had a belief that blood purified the dead, so it was basically just a trade for human sacrifice. If a person died, his peers would make sure he had a nice and proper funeral in his honor. If the deceased man had a family, they would make sure they were well taken care of financially.
Gladiators didn't always fight to the death, sometimes the contest ended in a draw. Their trainers did not want to see them endlessly killed seeing as though they put so much time and money into them. Approximately 1 in 5 contests left at least on of the participants dead. Regardless, over 500,000 people lost their lives and over a million animals were killed over the entire span of the gladiator games. Most gladiators only lived to be in the mid-20s. The last gladiatorial fight took place in 435 AD.

Gladiators won spectacular fame amongst their peers, most being poor. They became celebrities of some sort. Women sometimes wore hairpins that were dripped in gladiator's blood. Others used their sweat to mix in with facial creams. Gladiators were said to be a tad bit on the husky side. They were trained hard by their trainers and but they packed on extra pounds by carbohydrates. Two women names "Amazon" and "Achilla" once fought against each other and it ended in a draw. Women participated in animals hunts but in 200 AD, emperor Septimius Severus banned women from ever participating again.
